Experimental farm in Al-Lith explores future of Saudi agriculture

An experimental farm in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Lith Governorate is operating as part of research efforts linked to changes in the Kingdom’s agricultural sector, focusing on production methods that address food security and water use.
The farm applies sustainable production models that combine scientific research with commercial use. Officials said the approach supports the national food security system while addressing long-term water resource management.
Located at the Ghumaiqa Centre, the farm covers about 10 hectares. It serves as a testing site for agricultural technologies designed to address water scarcity.
The site includes developed open fields and greenhouses, supported by irrigation systems that combine drip and sprinkler methods with surface and subsurface technologies. These systems operate through smart controls that allow continuous monitoring of water consumption and improve efficiency.
The farm also uses treated and diluted low-salinity seawater. According to project officials, the objective is to diversify water sources used in agriculture, reduce dependence on freshwater and support farming activity in coastal and semi-arid areas.
