Mumbai: Months after a teenage Muslim girl here received a new hand after transplantation, she tied a Rakhi to the brother of the girl who donated her the hand. The patient is identified as 16-year-old Anamta Ahmed, and she tied Rakhi to Shivam Mistry, whose sister, 9-year-old Riya, who died in September 2024, donated her hand to Anamta, The Indian Express reported.
It was with the help of a Surat-based NGO that the hand transplant was made a reality. Anamta is 180 kilometres away from Riya’s location.
Riya’s father, Bobby Mistry, said that they touched the hands of Anamta and felt like it was Riya, who was the only girl child in their whole family. When he touched Anamta’s hand, he felt like his daughter was alive, he said.
Anamta lost her hand when she was in Class 10. Her hand came in contact with a high-tension wire, and her entire right arm was amputated by doctors in 2022. Further, her left arm was working only at 20 per cent capacity.
IN 2024, Class 4 student Riya fell sick in Valsad and she landed in critical condition. She started with vomiting and complained of an unbearable headache. Later, it was diagnosed that she was brain-dead due to a haemorrhage.
Around this time, the mentioned NGO, Donate Life, approached Riya’s family and counselled them. Riya’s family agreed to donate her organs. Following this, a registration was made on SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation), and Riya’s right hand, starting from the shoulder, was amputated and sent to Mumbai. It was transplanted on Anamta.
Anamta became the youngest in the world to undergo the procedure at shoulder level, TIE reported.
