Space shrimp and cake: NASA astronaut shares memorable meal pics with Axiom-4 crew on ISS
text_fieldsDining aboard the International Space Station (ISS) is about more than sustenance - it’s a celebration of unity, culture, and shared human experience.
NASA astronaut Jonny Kim recently shared one such heartwarming moment from his time in orbit, describing it as “one of the most unforgettable evenings” of his mission.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kim recalled a special dinner shared with the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) crew: “One of the most unforgettable evenings I've experienced on this mission was sharing a meal with new friends, Ax-4, aboard the International Space Station.” The evening wasn’t just about the food - it became a symbol of collaboration and camaraderie in one of the most remote environments humans have ever inhabited.
“We swapped stories and marvelled at how people from diverse backgrounds and nations came together to represent humanity in space,” Kim added.
Despite the limitations of cooking in microgravity, the crew managed to serve up a satisfying menu. The meal started with rehydrated shrimp cocktails and crackers - space-friendly but nostalgic in flavour. For the main course, the astronauts dined on savoury chicken and beef fajitas. And in a sweet finale, the cosmonauts contributed a cake made from sweet bread, condensed milk, and walnuts.
Kim’s post resonated with many, highlighting how shared meals in space offer more than nourishment - they provide comfort and connection far from home.
This wasn’t the crew’s first display of culinary innovation.
Earlier in June, Kim had posted about a unique food experiment aboard the ISS. After one astronaut expressed a craving for sushi, the team improvised with available ingredients to make “space sushi,” using rice, spam, fish, gochujang (Korean chilli paste), and wasabi.
