David Beckham to be made knight in King’s birthday honours next week
text_fieldsLondon: Former professional footballer David Beckham is to be given knighthood next week at King Charles’s birthday celebrations, The Guardian reported.
Beckham, known for his charity work of supporting underprivileged children among others, will take the title of sir and his wife, Victoria Beckham, will be called Lady Beckham.
The 50-year-old footballer has long been viewed a right choice for the tile a decade after he played more than hundred times for England, according to the report.
The couple were seen with Charles and Queen Camilla at the Chelsea flower show last month.
Beckham supports education programmes of the King’s Foundation as its official ambassador with his website claiming that it backs ‘efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature’.
The former footballer never baulks at expressing his love of nature, with once saying that he loved beekeeping at the couple’s estate in Oxfordshire.
Beckham was to receive a knighthood in 2011 but got blocked after being implicated in a tax avoidance scheme that was cleared of four years ago.
A Unicef special ambassador for 20 years, Beckham received the World Economic Forum crystal award this year for his works on children’s rights.
The award is usually given to people who use their art or culture activity to improve the conditions of the world.
It was earlier reported that Beckham along with former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville were part of a consortium to take over the football club Salford City.
