New Delhi: Billionaire Elon Musk on Tuesday suggested that Ukraine may have been linked to the large-scale cyberattack that caused a global outage on his social media platform, X.

Millions of users across Europe, North America, and Asia, including India, faced prolonged disruptions on Monday, with X becoming entirely inaccessible. According to outage tracking service DownDetector, the disruption peaked around 3 p.m.

Addressing the media, Musk claimed that digital traces of the cyberattack pointed to Ukraine.

"We're not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area," Musk said in an interview with Fox News.

During the outage, more than 40,000 users encountered connectivity issues, unable to post or even access pages on the platform.

Confirming that X had suffered a cyberattack, Musk said on Monday that efforts were underway to trace those responsible.

“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing...,” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO posted.

He further described the incident as an attempt to silence both him and X, particularly as he continues to criticize Ukraine while serving as an adviser to former US President Donald Trump.

Recently, Musk asserted that Ukraine’s front line "would collapse" without his Starlink satellite service but assured that access would not be revoked.

He also amplified his claims by sharing a post suggesting that the cyberattack was part of a broader campaign against him, linking it to recent protests over his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and acts of vandalism targeting Tesla facilities.

Musk acquired X in October 2022 for $44 billion.
