Sam Altman warns of possible ChatGPT capacity issues ahead of GPT-5 launch
text_fieldsNew Delhi: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has urged ChatGPT users to be patient as the company prepares to roll out new models and features, warning of potential “hiccups and capacity crunches” in the coming months.
“We have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months -- new models, products, features, and more. Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. Although it may be slightly choppy, we think you'll really love what we've created for you!” Altman posted on X.
While he did not specify which models were being launched, reports suggest that OpenAI is set to release its GPT-5 model in early August. The model is expected to be the company’s first large language model with unified reasoning capabilities, removing the need for users to manually select a reasoning model for complex tasks.
OpenAI has also announced plans to release its first open-weights model this month.
Altman recently revealed in a podcast with The Verge that GPT-5 had helped him craft a response to a difficult email, impressing him with its reasoning abilities. “I got emailed a question that I didn't quite understand. I put it in the model. This GPT5 answered it perfectly and I really kind of sat back in my chair and I was just like oh man...I got over it quickly,” he said.
Earlier this year, Altman said GPT-5 free-tier users would get unlimited chats at standard intelligence levels, while ChatGPT Plus subscribers would have access to a higher level of intelligence. Pro users would be able to run the model at an even more advanced setting.
