New York: TikTok was removed from leading app stores on Saturday evening, just before a federal law banning the platform came into effect. By 10:50 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, both Apple and Google had pulled the app, in compliance with the law that required TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform or face a US ban.

When users attempted to open TikTok on Saturday night, they were greeted with a pop-up message that stopped them from scrolling through videos. The message stated, "A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now." It also included a statement expressing hope for a resolution: "We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!"
