San Francisco: Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has decided to dismiss close to 3,600 of its employees, AFP reported.

Five percent of the workforce losing jobs after being identified as low performers will be replaced with new hires, according to the report citing Bloomberg.

‘I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster,’ Zuckerberg was quoted as saying.

The job cuts, according to Zuckerberg, are aimed at ensuring the company has the ‘strongest talent’ alongside ‘bring new people in’ the company which had ‘approximately 72,400 employees as of September’.

Microsoft last week announced removing one percent of its workforce based on performance.

Meta's decision to lay off comes ahead of Trump returning to the White House on January 20.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg nominated a Republican as Meta’s head of public affairs, signaling at what the report said his leaning towards ‘conservative ideas and political figures’.

Zuckerberg announced last week that the company will do away with its US fact-checking program, which was set up to fight misinformation on its platforms.

The new system will allow users to add contests to the posts like the feature on Elon Musk’s platform X.
