Lucknow: A 45-year-old man has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police for assaulting a burqa-wearing woman in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The arrestee was identified as Vishal Thakur. The accused was caught after the CCTV footage of the incident which went viral.

In 2023, the National Commission for Women (NCW) registered 28,811 complaints related to crimes against women. Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states that have reported the highest number of cases, with around 55 percent of the registered complaints. Uttar Pradesh, with 16,109, was followed by Delhi, 2,411, and Maharashtra, at 1,343, according to the data. Bihar recorded 1,312 complaints, Madhya Pradesh 1,165, Haryana 1,115, Rajasthan 1,011, Tamil Nadu 608, West Bengal 569, and Karnataka 501.

Reportedly, women belonging to socially and economically backward groups, including religious minorities and Dalits, are victims of sexual violence.
