Bangladesh will head to the polls in April 2026, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced on Friday, responding to growing domestic and international pressure to restore democratic order in the country.

Yunus made the announcement amid ongoing uncertainty that has gripped the nation since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power last year and subsequently fled the country. Her exit left a leadership vacuum and triggered widespread calls for a clear electoral timetable.

“The Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the elections at an appropriate time,” Yunus stated, offering some clarity as Bangladesh navigates a tense political transition.

While specific dates and electoral guidelines remain pending, the announcement marks the first concrete step toward reestablishing democratic governance after months of speculation and unrest.
