Beijing: The death toll from a mine accident in China's southwestern city of Chongqing has increased to 23, authorities say.

The accident happened on Friday evening at the closed Diaoshuidong colliery in Yongchuan district, when 24 workers were dismantling equipment in the pit, reports Xinhua news agency.

On Saturday, one of the trapped workers was successfully rescued. The mine was suspended and shut down over two months ago. The cause of the accident is being further investigated.

China's mines are among the world's deadliest, with 16 deaths reported in late September after high levels of carbon monoxide trapped miners at the Songzao coal mine in Chongqing, Aljazeera reported.
