New York: Four people were killed in New York City on Monday when a man opened fire, before taking his own life, news agency AP reported.
One of those killed in the attack at an office tower here was an off-duty New York City police officer.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that Didarul Islam, 36, was an immigrant from Bangladesh serving as a police officer in the city for 3 1/2 years.
Calling Didarul Islam a hero, Tisch said ‘He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice’.
The gunman is identified as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas who is found to have a ‘documented mental health history’.
Jessica Tisch said that motive for the attack has not been established, adding ‘We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location’.
The attack took place at 345 Park Avenue, which is a commercial office building housing firms including the NFL and Rudin Management, KPMG and Blackstone.
Mayor Eric Adams said that one man remains critically injured in the attack while four others sustained minor injuries.
Surveillance footage showed a man getting out of a BMW, carrying an M$ riffle and walking towards the building.
Entering the building, the assailant opened fire on the police officer, before shooting a woman.
Afterwards the man went over to the elevator and shot a security guard before shooting another man in the lobby, according to the commissioner.
The man then shot and killed one person on the 3 rd floor to a real estate management company.
Afterwards he walked down a hallway and shot himself, according to the report.
Police have recovered a rifle case, a revolver, magazines and ammunition in his car.
