Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years in prison each in a corruption case related to the illegal sale of state gifts. The verdict was announced inside the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where the trial was conducted.

Special court judge Shahrukh Arjumand found the couple guilty in what is known as the Toshakhana 2.0 case. The sentence includes 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and an additional seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10 million on both Khan and his wife.

The case, filed in July 2024, centered on allegations that the couple sold valuable gifts received from the Saudi government in 2021 instead of depositing them in the Toshakhana, the state's official gift repository. The items reportedly included expensive watches and diamond and gold jewelry sets.

Both Khan and Bushra Bibi were already incarcerated in Adiala Jail after being convicted in the Al-Qadir Trust case earlier this year. Though they had previously been granted bail in this specific Toshakhana case, they were formally indicted in December 2024.

The sentencing marks another legal blow for the former prime minister, who has been implicated in dozens of cases since being removed from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
