Melbourne: Saurabh Anand, a 33-year-old Indian-origin man, was left with life-threatening injuries after being attacked with a machete by a group of teenagers in Melbourne, local media reported.

The assault took place around 7.30 p.m. on 19 July, as Anand was walking home from a pharmacy near the Central Square Shopping Centre in Altona Meadows. He was on a phone call with a friend when five teenagers surrounded him.

According to The Australian Today, one attacker searched his pockets while another repeatedly punched him, knocking him to the ground. A third assailant then held a machete to his throat before striking him.

“While I was trying to protect myself, the machete just went through my wrist. The second attack went through my hand. The third went through the bone,” Anand told The Age.

The attack left him with stab wounds to his shoulder and back, a fractured spine, and several broken bones. “All I remember is the pain, and my hand was hanging by a thread,” he said.

Despite his injuries, Anand managed to leave the scene and call for help. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors initially considered amputating his hand. However, after a complex surgery, his hand was successfully reattached.

Australian media reported that four of the five teenage suspects have been arrested, while police investigations are continuing.

The incident follows another recent case in Australia in which Indian student Charanpreet Singh was allegedly racially abused and assaulted by a group of men after a parking dispute near Kintore Avenue.
