Pakistani forces kill 50 militants in Balochistan border operation
text_fieldsIslamabad: Pakistani security forces have killed 50 militants in a four-day operation in the border region of Balochistan province, the army said in a statement issued overnight.
The operation, carried out in the Sambaza area of Zhob district near the Afghan border, took place between 7 and 11 August. The military said that between 7 and 9 August, 47 members of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were “sent to hell” during a series of engagements.
A subsequent sanitization operation in the surrounding areas on the night of 10-11 August resulted in the killing of three more militants, the statement added. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were recovered from those killed.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have commended the security forces for the successful operation, according to state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.
Separately, nine security personnel, including an officer, were killed and six others injured on Monday night when their convoy was ambushed in Balochistan’s southern Washuk district, bordering Iran, Dawn reported, citing officials.
Militants in Washuk also attempted to attack a recently transferred police station, injuring three policemen. Security personnel managed to repel the attack. There has been no official military statement on the incident so far.
