Washington: In a rare and direct rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly condemned the recent deadly missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, calling them “unnecessary” and urging an immediate halt to the violence.
Taking to his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump wrote, “I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!”
The comments come in the aftermath of Russia’s hours-long bombardment of Kyiv, which resulted in the deaths of at least nine civilians and left more than 70 injured. The assault marks the deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital since July last year, intensifying international concerns just as fragile peace negotiations appear to be gaining momentum.
Trump’s unusually sharp statement stands out amid his generally cautious tone regarding Putin throughout the ongoing conflict. His call to action underscores the urgency of de-escalating the war, which has now dragged on for over two years with mounting human and economic costs.
The latest wave of Russian aggression, targeting both civilian and strategic infrastructure in Kyiv, has drawn widespread condemnation from global leaders. With Trump joining the chorus of criticism, pressure is growing on Moscow to curb hostilities and engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at ending the war.
