Trump, Netanyahu to meet as hopes rise for Gaza ceasefire

Washington: United States President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to meet for the third time this year, with discussions expected to focus on Israel’s ongoing 21-month war against Hamas in Gaza and the broader regional implications following a recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran.
Trump, who has made clear his desire for a swift end to the Gaza conflict, is expected to press Netanyahu for progress on ceasefire negotiations currently being discussed between Israel and Hamas. It remains uncertain, however, whether the high-level meeting will produce a breakthrough capable of halting the hostilities.
The renewed talks come as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on international trade partners to finalise new trade agreements before a self-imposed Wednesday deadline. Beginning Monday, the United States will start sending formal notifications to countries warning that, if no deals are reached, increased tariffs may take effect as early as August 1. The administration’s move adds to the uncertainty facing businesses, consumers, and global trading partners.
Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, stated during an appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation that President Trump remains open to extending negotiations but insists the administration is exercising maximum pressure to compel swift agreements. “The president will decide when it’s time to move on,” Hassett said.
Amid these international developments, Trump celebrated a significant domestic legislative victory over the Fourth of July weekend. On Friday, he signed into law a sweeping package of tax breaks and spending cuts, marking a key achievement that could shape his second-term legacy.
The signing ceremony took place in front of a crowd of picnic-goers during the White House’s annual Independence Day celebration. Surrounded by Republican lawmakers and members of his Cabinet, Trump used a ceremonial gavel gifted by House Speaker Mike Johnson—previously used to pass the legislation—to formally endorse the multitrillion-dollar bill.
Overhead, fighter jets and stealth bombers flew above the festivities as the president, who had set July 4 as a deadline for Congress to act, declared victory on a measure that had faced steep odds and fierce political divisions.
Trump’s packed agenda — from war diplomacy to economic brinkmanship and legislative triumph — marks a pivotal moment in his presidency as he looks to reinforce his domestic standing and global influence ahead of upcoming challenges.
