Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Announces 125 Units of Free Electricity for Households from August 1
text_fieldsPatna: In a major pre-election announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday declared that every household in Bihar will receive 125 units of free electricity per month starting August 1, 2025, based on the July billing cycle. The move is expected to benefit around 1.67 crore families across the state.
In addition to the free electricity scheme, Kumar unveiled a large-scale renewable energy initiative aimed at boosting solar power generation. Over the next three years, the state government plans to install rooftop solar power plants, with the consent of residents, targeting a total generation capacity of 10,000 MW.
As part of the initiative, the government will fully fund solar panel installations for extremely poor households under the ‘Kutir Jyoti Yojana’. Other eligible families will receive govt support to adopt solar energy, helping to make Bihar more energy-resilient and environmentally sustainable.
CM Nitish Kumar said the state has consistently worked to provide electricity at affordable rates and is now advancing toward a greener and more equitable energy future.
Reacting to the announcement, JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar praised it as a “master stroke” ahead of the Assembly Elections. He said the move would benefit people across all castes and communities.
Neeraj Kumar said that when Nitish Kumar came to power, he removed lanterns from the homes of the poor and backward communities and now, he is removing their electricity burden, enabling the next generation to study without interruption.
He further added, “This will give a 33,000-volt current to those who wish to keep Bihar in darkness.”
The announcement also comes in the backdrop of a political promise from Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, who recently said he would provide 200 units of free electricity if voted to power.
