EFLU students demand reopening of Najeeb Ahmed disappearance case after court accepts closure report
text_fieldsThe Students’ Union of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) has called for the reopening of the case surrounding the disappearance of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, expressing continued support for his family.
This appeal follows the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court’s decision on June 30 to accept the closure report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had been investigating Najeeb’s disappearance since October 15, 2016.
At the time, Najeeb was a student of MSc Biotechnology at JNU and was last seen in his college hostel.
According to reports from that period, Najeeb was allegedly assaulted by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the night before he went missing.
Despite multiple investigations, no conclusive leads have emerged on his whereabouts.
In a statement released on July 7, the EFLU Students’ Union expressed disappointment over the outcome of the case. “Despite investigation by top agencies, the question ‘where is Najeeb’ remains unanswered. The investigation’s failure to find leads on Najeeb’s whereabouts is compounded by the fact that ABVP members involved in the attack were not questioned,” the statement read.
The students also amplified the voice of Najeeb’s mother, Fathima Nafees, who has long fought for justice in her son’s case. “There are hundreds of Muslim youth jailed without any crime. Najeeb’s name on that list would just increase the number. There is no value for a Muslim life in India,” she said.
The union reiterated its solidarity with the Ahmed family and urged authorities to recognise Najeeb’s case as an “enforced disappearance,” calling on the CBI to reopen and thoroughly investigate the matter.
“Najeeb’s case will not be erased,” the union declared.
