PM Modi receives ceremonial welcome in Trinidad & Tobago, set to strengthen bilateral ties
text_fieldsPrime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, marking the second stop of his five-nation tour.
He was warmly received at Piarco International Airport by his counterpart, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and greeted with a ceremonial welcome that included a guard of honour and cultural performances.
Several Cabinet ministers, senators, and citizens dressed as mythological characters were present to welcome the Indian leader.
Sharing his gratitude on social media, PM Modi posted on X: “Landed in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. I thank Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, distinguished members of the Cabinet and MPs for the gesture of welcoming me at the airport.” He added, “This visit will further cement bilateral ties between our nations. Looking forward to addressing a community programme in a few hours from now.”
This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago and the first visit by an Indian prime minister since 1999.
Reflecting on the importance of the relationship, he posted separately, “May the friendship between India and Trinidad & Tobago continue to scale new heights in the times to come!” alongside photos of his welcome ceremony.
Upon reaching his hotel, PM Modi was greeted enthusiastically by the Indian diaspora, who chanted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Modi, Modi.” Musical performances and bhajans created a festive atmosphere.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, also posted on X: “PM @narendramodi has arrived in the capital city of Port of Spain in Trinidad & Tobago, to a warm ceremonial welcome & Guard of Honour. In a special gesture, PM was received by PM @MPKamla and members of her Cabinet & several other dignitaries at the airport.”
During his stay, Modi will hold talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, focusing on enhancing the longstanding bilateral relationship. He is also expected to address a Joint Session of the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and engage with the Indian community at a major event at the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva.
Ahead of the visit, PM Modi emphasised the cultural and historical bonds between India and Trinidad and Tobago, expressing eagerness to deepen ties with the Caribbean nation.
Modi arrived from Ghana, where India and Ghana elevated their partnership to a comprehensive level.
His next stops include Argentina (July 4–5), Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, and finally Namibia, concluding the multi-nation diplomatic tour.
