Sudarshan Chakra defence shield to safeguard India by 2035: PM Modi
text_fieldsPrime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled plans for “Sudarshan Chakra,” an advanced multi-layered defence framework designed to shield India from enemy strikes, including missile attacks, terrorism, and cyber warfare.
The initiative, announced during his Independence Day address, draws inspiration from Hindu mythology — where Lord Krishna uses the Sudarshan Chakra to protect and aid Arjuna — and aims to be fully researched, developed, and manufactured within India.
Similar in concept to Israel’s Iron Dome and the United States’ proposed Golden Dome, the Sudarshan Chakra will integrate advanced surveillance, cyber defence, and physical protection into one unified system.
The Prime Minister set 2035 as the target for expanding, strengthening, and modernising this shield. “Every citizen must feel protected,” he emphasised.
India already operates a robust defence network — the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) — which successfully thwarted Pakistan’s missile strikes during Operation Sindoor in May. For nearly 100 hours, starting May 7, Pakistan attempted to target Indian military bases, down fighter jets, and damage cities, but failed to breach the IACCS barrier.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra, however, is expected to go beyond missile interception.
Sources told NDTV it may incorporate precision counterstrike capabilities and advanced cyber warfare countermeasures to neutralise threats like hacking and phishing. The project will involve collaboration between India’s top defence and scientific research institutions, the armed forces, and private sector innovators, aligning closely with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push for self-reliance in critical defence infrastructure.
