Palakkad woman tests positive for Nipah; over 100 people in high risk list

Palakkad: A 39-year-old woman is admitted to a private hospital in Perinthalmanna with suspected Nipah virus infection, The Indian Express reported.
Now the reports said that test at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune has confirmed Nipah infection.
The woman, hailing from Kizhakkumpuram in Thachanattukara grama panchayat, is currently on a ventilator support.
According to officials at the Palakkad District Medical Office (DMO) the woman is in critical condition.
After the preliminary tests pointed to potential Nipah virus infection, samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.
It is reported citing sources at the DMO that the results are expected on Friday.
After developing high fever and cold, the woman went to a local clinic on June 26.
As her condition worsened she was admitted to a nursing home for two days before shifted to the private hospital on June 30, according to the source.
Meanwhile, authorities have found large number of bats in the vicinity of her home. However, the exact source of the infection is not known.
Muhammed Saleem K P, president of Thachanattukara grama panchayat said that she is the mother of three and her husband works in the UAE who returned home on Thursday.
‘The health department has started contact tracing and is monitoring all individuals who may have interacted with her,’ he was quoted as saying.
