Saudi Arabia detains 22,500 in nationwide legal violations
text_fieldsSaudi Arabia has arrested more than 22,500 individuals in a week-long nationwide crackdown targeting violations of residency, labour and border security laws, according to the Ministry of Interior.
Authorities detained 13,800 people for residency law violations, 5,200 for breaches of border security regulations and 3,400 for breaking labour laws. The arrests also included 1,687 individuals caught attempting to illegally enter the Kingdom, 61% of whom were Ethiopian nationals, 38% Yemeni and the rest from other countries. An additional 40 people were arrested while trying to leave the country unlawfully.
The ministry confirmed the detention of 15 individuals suspected of transporting, employing or harbouring violators. Legal action is now underway for more than 18,300 detainees, comprising 15,700 men and 2,500 women.
Out of those detained, over 11,000 have already been deported, while 11,000 have been referred to their respective diplomatic missions for travel documentation. Around 3,200 are currently awaiting repatriation.
The ministry warned that those caught facilitating illegal residency or employment could face up to 15 years in prison, fines up to one million riyals and confiscation of involved vehicles or property. Names of violators may also be publicly disclosed.
Officials urged the public to report violations via hotlines, 911 in Mecca, Riyadh and the Eastern Province and 999 or 996 in other regions.
