Communal remarks against Muslims: petitions filed against Vellappally
text_fieldsKottayam: In the matter of Kerala Ezhava community leader and SNDP general secretary Vellappally Natesan making communal remarks against Kerala Muslims, the SNDP Samrakshana Samiti and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) filed complaints with the police demanding legal action. When SNDP Samrakshana Samiti filed the complaint with the Kottayam West Police, PDP lodged the complaint with the Kottayam District Police.
Vellappally made communally charged remarks against Kerala Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram, Muslim organisation Samastha and the Malappuram district itself while delivering a speech at an SNDP event in Kottayam. He claimed that the state government has to check with Malappuram, the district where the Muslim population is the majority, before implementing any law it passes, or there will be trouble.
He said, “Things have reached a point where you just have to listen to Kanthapuram and rule. As V S Achuthanandan said, Muslims have become the majority in Kerala. Where is this land going? It is not secularism here, it is religious domination. When the school timings were decided, Samastha immediately came up with objections. They demanded to adjust the timings by reducing the Onam and Christmas holidays. When they tried to bring Zumba, they (Samastha) demanded them (government) to stop that too.”
He then claimed that the Muslim community turned against him for “telling the truth”. And it was only after the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan backed him that they “shut up”.
“They say that telling the truth is communal and casteist,” Vellappally claimed.
He continued that when electoral constituencies in Hindu majority areas were reduced, four seats were added in Malappuram. The Indian Union Muslim League in Kerala is going to contest in more seats in Kerala and they are going to ask for further seats, he said, claiming that the party is aiming for the chief minister’s post.
He further claimed that the industrial sector is dominated by Muslims, while the education sector has been monopolised by the Christian community. The Ezhavas are represented only in the employment guarantee scheme. Certain powers are ruling Kottayam, he claimed. When other communities achieve everything by standing together, Ezhavas should also become a political force and gain representation no matter which party they join, Vellappally said.
