The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have expressed their support for an Arab-backed reconstruction plan for Gaza, which aims to improve living conditions in the war-torn region without displacing its residents.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the ministers described the proposal as a "realistic path to Gaza’s reconstruction", emphasising that its implementation would lead to a swift and sustainable improvement in the humanitarian crisis affecting the Palestinian people.

The $53 billion plan, spearheaded by Egypt and endorsed by Arab leaders earlier this week, seeks to establish a temporary governance structure in Gaza. The proposal suggests forming an administrative committee made up of independent Palestinian technocrats, tasked with managing humanitarian aid and overseeing the region's affairs.

This committee would function under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority until a long-term political solution is reached.

However, Israel and U.S. President Donald Trump have rejected the plan.

Trump has instead put forward a competing vision aimed at transforming Gaza into a "Middle East Riviera."

The European ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working with Arab nations to support the initiative. Their statement also emphasised the importance of a central role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza’s governance, aligning with its reform agenda.

Additionally, they stressed that Hamas must neither govern Gaza nor pose a threat to Israel, highlighting the need for stability and security in the region.
