Trailer for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ unveiled

Disney and 20th Century Studios have unveiled the first official trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment in James Cameron’s acclaimed Avatar series. The film is slated for release on 19 December 2025 — precisely three years after Avatar: The Way of Water made its record-breaking $2.32 billion debut worldwide.

The trailer, which debuted alongside The Fantastic Four: First Steps and is now streaming online, offers a first look at the Ash People — a fierce, soot-covered Na’vi tribe with command over fire.

Led by the powerful and enigmatic Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin, this group was first teased during the 2024 D23 Expo and is positioned as a spiritual and militant contrast to the Metkayina clan, TNIE reported.

The footage showcases Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family allying once again with the Metkayina to confront Varang, who is aligned with a revived version of the Recombinant Quaritch (played by Stephen Lang). In a chilling moment, Varang tells Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), “Your goddess has no dominion here,” hinting at a deep ideological divide among the Na’vi tribes.

The trailer features scenes of intense combat, raging fires, and inner turmoil, including emotionally charged moments that strain the relationship between Jake and Neytiri.

James Cameron reportedly revealed that Avatar: The Way of Water and Fire and Ash were initially envisioned as a single film, but due to the narrative’s complexity, the team opted to split them into two parts.

He hinted that the upcoming instalment would not only offer breathtaking visuals but also place key characters in emotionally intense and difficult situations.

The ensemble cast sees the return of familiar faces such as Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and Joel David Moore. The film also brings in new cast members, including David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh.

With the original Avatar (2009) still reigning as the highest-grossing movie globally at $2.92 billion, expectations for the third entry remain exceptionally high. Cameron reportedly assured audiences that Fire and Ash would offer a visually rich and action-packed journey, reinforcing Avatar as one of the most ambitious franchises in cinematic history.
