Ahmedabad tragedy: BJ Medical College cancels MBBS exams, calls off doctors’ vacation
cancel

Ahmedabad: B.J. Medical College (BJMC) has cancelled all internal examinations for MBBS students following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which struck a hostel housing medical students near Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The impact of the crash has left the student community shaken, with over 200 students, including MBBS residents, having returned home due to trauma and fear. The crash directly hit the college’s mess-cum-hostel building, causing significant disruption to daily life on campus.

College authorities said more than 500 students, especially those in their first and second years, have been affected by the decision. At least 40 students who were present at the hostel during the crash remain in deep psychological distress, according to sources.

"In light of the current mental and emotional state of our students, and the logistical disruption caused by the collapse of the mess-cum-hostel building, all internal theory and practical exams stand postponed until further notice,” a senior BJMC official confirmed.

The mess building, located on the first and second floors, also served as a residential space. Its destruction has left students and interns without regular meals or basic facilities.

In addition, BJMC has cancelled the summer vacation for all medical faculty and doctors. The second phase of the break, which was set to begin on 13 June, has been withdrawn. Medical staff have been instructed to report for duty from 14 June to support the ongoing emergency care efforts.

BJMC doctors are playing a key role in treating the victims of the crash at Civil Hospital, which is managing a high influx of injured patients.

Authorities have said that examinations will be rescheduled once students have had time to recover from the psychological impact of the tragedy.
