Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reaffirmed that the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project will ensure that every displaced resident receives a new home, asserting that the initiative will be a model for urban transformation across the state.

“Dharavi will not only redefine Mumbai’s urban landscape but also set a benchmark for cities across Maharashtra,” Fadnavis told NDTV. “No resident will be left without a roof over their head. Every eligible person will be allotted a home.”

Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums and among Mumbai’s most densely populated areas, is currently undergoing a massive redevelopment aimed at improving living standards and urban infrastructure.

To accommodate those affected by the project, the government has allotted 40 acres of railway land in Matunga. This land will house between 15,000 and 20,000 people during the first phase of redevelopment.

SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, said that construction on this parcel of land has already begun. “This marks the first major physical step in the transformation of Dharavi,” he explained. “We are focused on rehabilitating those directly impacted while simultaneously redeveloping both slum areas and existing railway structures.”

Fadnavis previously stated that post-redevelopment, Dharavi could rival Mumbai’s commercial hub, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), signaling a vision for a modern, inclusive city space. The project is seen as a critical move toward creating a slum-free Mumbai.

Out of 90,000 housing units identified for assessment, 70,000 have already been surveyed. Authorities aim to finish the remainder soon, barring interruptions during the monsoon season.

The comprehensive redevelopment plan includes constructing high-rise residential and commercial complexes, improving roadways and bridges, and enhancing access to essentials like clean drinking water and sanitation. It also prioritises boosting social infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and recreational spaces.
