Etihad Rail has announced the launch of the UAE's first high-speed, all-electric passenger train, promising a travel time of just 30 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The train, which will operate at a speed of 350 km/h, will connect six key stations, including Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas Island, Zayed International Airport, Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Jaddaf in Dubai. The project is expected to boost the UAE’s economy significantly, contributing Dh145 billion to the nation’s GDP over the next 50 years.

Etihad Rail also plans to roll out a regular passenger train that will link all seven emirates and extend towards the border with Oman. The regular-speed train will operate at 200 km/h, accommodating up to 400 passengers and will feature stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah. This service will also form part of the larger GCC Railway network once it becomes operational, enabling seamless travel across the Gulf region.

The infrastructure for the high-speed train is currently under planning, with tenders being finalized before construction begins. While the rail system is fully equipped, Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, noted during a media briefing in Abu Dhabi that there is no confirmed timeline for when operations will commence.

Meanwhile, the regular-speed train will pass through scenic routes, including the Liwa Desert and its famous oasis, and is designed to use the same rail infrastructure as cargo trains. It is expected to provide a convenient and sustainable transport option for residents and visitors alike.

As the UAE gears up for this ambitious rail project, the network promises to redefine connectivity within the country and beyond, linking major cities, airports and the wider GCC region.
